- Comments
- This specimen was unusually large for
H. peckii which is fairly commonly found in California.
H. ferrugineum officially differs from H. peckii by
taste and presence of clamp connections. Photographs of both species
appear in Vol. 2 of the Fungi of Switzerland by
Breitenbach and Kranzlin. Based solely on these photos in the book,
this specimen is most likely H. ferrugineum. Neither species
is considered edible.
- Processing
- Original image was taken on 35mm Fuji
Velvia using a Nikon 55mm macro lens. A print was then made from the
slide. The print was then digitized at 600dpi with 24bit color depth
and then reduced to the current resolution. The color depth was
reduced to 8bits using Debabelizer. The image includes its own color
map which may not get used if you are viewing it from a Web browser
on an 8bit screen.
The original photograph was awarded first place in the limited
pictorial category of the 1994 North American Mycological Society
photo contest.
